DVB-C & DVB-T

Digital video broadcasting for cable and terrestrial networks

DVB-C and DVB-T are the European standards for digital television over cable and terrestrial networks respectively. Both technologies transport complete multiplexes - bundles of TV and radio channels - over radio-frequency channels.

In professional environments, DVB-C and DVB-T are often used to distribute television over existing coax infrastructure. A headend receives the sources - satellite, terrestrial signal or in-house channels, for example - and modulates them back out over the building’s coax network. Any standard television with a DVB-C or DVB-T tuner receives the channels directly, with no set-top box per room.

For locations with an existing coax network this is often the most efficient route: the infrastructure stays in place, while the channel line-up is managed centrally and can be adjusted easily.
