An IPTV headend is the heart of a television and video installation over IP. All sources — satellite, terrestrial signal, cameras, encoders and in-house content — come together in one central system that converts them into standardised IP streams.

From the headend, distribution runs over the existing data network: cabling, Wi-Fi or a combination. Televisions, set-top boxes, PCs and mobile devices can play the streams, depending on the chosen protocols.

The strength of a headend architecture is manageability: channel line-up, processing and distribution are managed centrally, and the installation grows with the environment — from a handful of screens to hundreds of endpoints.
